Can you believe it is the second month of 2015 already? Where does the time go? How are those New Year resolutions working out for you? Well maybe I can help you out with a few. Have you ever thought about how scuba diving can help you fulfill your resolutions? Why not think about these ideas and see if they help your resolve.
How does scuba apply to one of the most popular of resolutions – exercising?
Although you should never plan a strenuous dive, you can use diving
to get exercise. First, shore diving is an excellent way to strengthen your
legs, tighten your tushy and get a moderate cardio workout as you kick out to
your descent point. If you are boat diving, the exercise may be a less
impactful, but at least you get a little resistance exercising as your fins cut
through the water as you kick. If you find yourself kicking into a current,
then you definitely will get a little bit of a cardio workout until you get
yourself out of the current. Please don’t plan to swim against a current as a
means for a workout, though, as it is not highly recommended to have a strenuous dive. So get off that couch, pack your gear, and head to the water to blow some bubbles.
Or maybe one of your resolutions was to find a stress-reliever to help you relax after a very stressful day or week?
Well, what better thing to
do than dive? The peace of the underwater world can just wash your cares away.
What does a better job of taking your mind of the trials of the day than
watching the antics of your favorite sea-creatures. Leave the noise of your
harried world behind, and just concentrate on the rhythm of your own breathing. Let the stress melt away as you breath nice and evenly. Hey it sounds almost just like yoga – huh?
Did you promise yourself this year you would work on improving your team-building skills?
Well, scuba diving is absolutely a great answer to this. Unless
you’ve been trained in and have the redundant equipment for solo-diving, you
should dive with a always buddy and keep them in site. If something goes wrong
on your dive, you have a team member to help you resolve the issue. To top
that, get yourself certified in search and recovery. This is definitely a team
activity as you learn to work with fellow divers to locate a lost item by means
of a pre-planned search pattern. Then divers work together to return that item to the
surface, whether it be with a lift-bag or some other means of recovery. And
another team-building skill is good communication. This is definitely a skill
you develop with your buddy, as you use learn to use international hand signals
or develop a sign language all your own.
Was one of your resolutions for 2015 to learn a new creative skill?
How about underwater photography or videography. Maybe you enjoy this on
the surface. Well I say challenge yourself and learn to do it underwater. Grab
that new GoPro you just got, or invest in an underwater housing for you
favorite camera, and go for it. You will definitely learn a whole new skill set while attempting to take that awesome picture or catch that magic moment on video. And as with any
wildlife photography, one of the greatest skills you will develop, as a bonus,
is patience. And when that picture turns out a bit blurry, just tell your
friends you were trying for that “artsy” effect.
Maybe you told yourself 2015 will be the year you start a new career direction.
Why not become a professional in the dive industry?
Become an instructor, or maybe a divemaster at a dive resort or aboard a
charter boat or liveaboard. Or maybe become gainfully employed by your local
dive shop or even an equipment manufacturer. Who knows, but does it hurt to go
for a career in something you enjoy doing?
Finally, my favorite.
You promised yourself you would make the effort
to take a vacation and experience more of the world. I say make sure you follow
through with this resolution by making your next getaway a dive vacation! There are some many exciting and exotic destinations to choose from, who could resist? And let's not forget all the different cultures and amazing sites there are to take in. Or all the unique sea creatures you've always heard about, but have never seen for yourself? Don't miss out.
