Some say you have not experienced La Paz until you visit its barrier islands of Espiritu Santo and Partida. Connected to one another by a thin isthmus, these uninhabited islands are protected under UNESCO as a biosphere and are an important part of La Paz's eco-tourism industry. Managed by Mexico's Commission of Natural Protected Areas, these islands were sold to the Mexican government in 2003 thanks to a cooperative effort of few non-profit organizations who raised 3.3 million dollars to compensate communal landowners for their land.
Just a short boat ride from the Pichilingue Peninsula, these islands are a favorite destination for campers, kayakers and scuba divers seeking out adventure and isolation. The islands boast of abundant marine life and land-based reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals, including a ring-tailed cat, black jack-rabbit and ground squirrel indigenous to the islands, as well was, dozens of beautiful, solitary bays. A marvel of natural conservation, these islands host a large population of sea lions, manta rays, dolphins, turtles, and the seasonal gray whales and gray sharks.
